Driving in Spain? Read these tips from yourspanishproperty.com first.

There is no longer a requirement to exchange your UK driving licence for a Spanish one if you intend to live in Spain. You can continue to use your UK licence until it expires providing that you are reachable at the address on your licence.

Your UK licence must be one of the EU style licences and preferably the new photocard licence. We suggest if you still have an old style paper licence that you exchange it for a new one before coming to Spain.

A point to consider is that, if you become a resident in Spain, the DVLA expect you to return your UK licence and will exhange it for a certificate of entitlement which you can then swap in Spain for a Spanish licence. Another example of what someone giveth, someone taketh away.

When driving in Spain you must carry in your vehicle a fire extinguisher, reflective jackets, spare set of bulbs and tools to fit them, spare tyre and tools to fit, 2 hazard triangles and an approved type First Aid kit. It is an offence to use your mobile phone when driving. You should also be aware that radar detectors are illegal in Spain.

You can only drive your non Spanish registered vehicle for up to 6 months in the year. If you become resident you will have to change your vehicle or put it onto Spanish plates. When driving your UK car in Spain you should ensure it has valid insurance, road tax and MOT. You must carry all vehicle documents with you at all times when driving. That means driving licence, vehicle log book, valid MOT and insurance certificate. Photocopies are not acceptable.

Reflector jackets should now be carried for every usual occupant of the vehicle and should be inside the car (not in the boot/trunk), preferably visible from outside. They should be worn at all times outside of urban areas, not just at night, when you are forced to stop at the side of the road because of a breakdown etc.

Speeding will result in an on the spot fine for non residents and/or foreign plated cars. Take particular care where the speed limit reduces on approach to a junction or roundabout , e.g. from 90 to 60 to 40.

Spain has tough anti drink-drive laws and if you get caught you will be punished. Don't risk it.
